Will the price of tomatoes reach the century in Odisha? Well, the current trend seems to indicate that the price of tomato per kg has almost tripled in the last three to four days.
At present, people are forced to buy tomatoes which are one of the essential vegetables at Rs 80 to Rs 90 per kg. The rate was around Rs 20 to 25 a few days ago in different parts of the state.
It is pertinent to mention here that the people of Odisha have already faced a lot of inconveniences following the rise in lemon prices last month. The sharp rise in tomato prices has now started to hit people hard as it is one of the essentials that accompanies almost every dish. In addition, many people prefer it in salads.
“Tomatoes were being sold at Rs 20-25 per kg a few days ago. Now prices vary from Rs 50 to Rs 60 to Rs 80 to Rs 90 per kg. We used to buy about 2-3kg at a time but now it’s hard to even go for half a kilo,” said a Cuttack resident.
Traders attributed the rise in prices to the lack of local production. Due to insufficient production, most of the tomato stock is imported from other states for which prices are higher.
Devendranath Sahoo, secretary of the Chhatrabazar Traders Association, said, “We are now dependent on stocks from other states due to the decline in local production. It will take another 15 days for prices to stabilize.
