All Table Talk Pies employees at the Kelley Square facility were escorted out of the building safely and without injury Wednesday morning after an oven caught fire in the establishment, owner Harry Kokkinis confirmed to MassLive.
“All of our facility workers were able to do this,” Kokkinis said. “And that’s the most important thing.”
Kokkinis also confirmed that it was an oven that caught fire in the facility on Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters told MassLive the fire then spread to a conveyor belt and continued to a ventilation pipe on the roof, where flames were visible at one point.
At around 1 p.m., firefighters brought the blaze under control and inspected the building.
There are 130 full-time production staff working at the Kelley Square facility. It is not known how many of these employees will now be out of work.
All employees would normally be on Thanksgiving leave tomorrow, Kokkinis said, adding that the company would work with the city’s public health and fire department to assess damage to the facility starting Friday.
“There is going to be a lot of cleaning to do,” he said. “I’m sure we can keep a number of people busy doing it. “
Kokkinis praised the Worcester Fire Department for its swift response to the blaze.
“I just want to say the fire department did a great job for us to make sure everyone could get out safely and that there was no more damage than there was. had, “he said.
Table Talk Pies says it does not have a timeline for when it expects to be fully operational again, but will seek approval from the city’s public health and fire department to isolate the specific area that has been damaged and carry out production on other lines in the facility once the damage has been assessed and cleaned up.
In August, city officials opened the new 120,000 square foot Table Talk Pies bakery in the former Crompton & Knowles complex in the South Main District.
Table Talk has announced plans to employ 180 full-time staff for operations at the new location, including the current 130 full-time production workers at Kelley Square Bakery.
