A joint team of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the government railway police (GRP), Cuttack on Wednesday intercepted a huge amount of cash hidden in the luggage of a passenger who was traveling in the Rajdhani Express to New Delhi.
The passenger, identified as Arun Kumar Swain, was arrested for questioning following the recovery of bundles of cash denominated in Rs 10 and Rs 20 (new Indian banknotes) in his possession.
Swain allegedly carried cash, estimated at over Rs 24.50 lakh, which was stowed in four luggage racks. Swain, according to sources, is from Jajpur district.
Sources said Swain boarded the Rajdhani Express from Bhubaneswar. Following receipt of a tip, the joint RPF and GRP team conducted a thorough baggage search and recovered the cash. As the passenger could not give any satisfactory explanation regarding the source and reason behind the transport of the huge amount of money, he was detained at Cuttack station for further investigation.
A team of RPF and GRP officials are currently questioning the passenger.
âThe passenger claims that the money was handed over to him by a person and that he was asked to hand it over to someone in Delhi. We are conducting a more in-depth investigation and the video surveillance of Bhubaneswar station will be examined, âsaid a senior RPF official.
The senior official further informed that officials from the Income Tax Department had already been made aware of the incident and would also assist in the investigation.
