WILLCOX, Arizona – Law enforcement officers gunn down a gunman outside a house in rural southern Arizona where he fled after shooting and injuring a state soldier during a checkpoint road, officials said on Friday.

The soldier had started a pursuit maneuver to force the man’s SUV to stop on Interstate 10 near Willcox on Thursday when the man fired a handgun at the soldier’s vehicle and injured the soldier as the man’s vehicle was still turning, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

After his vehicle stopped, the man ran off the freeway to a nearby house where officers went in response to a call from a resident and shot the suspect when he ignored the orders and s ‘went to the front door of the house, the office said.

The incident began when the soldier observed the man’s SUV traveling at 179 km / h (111 mph), the statement said.

The man stopped first, but then left, prompting a chase by the soldier on the outskirts of Willcox, the statement said.

The injured soldier underwent surgery at a Tucson hospital, and Sheriff Mark Dannels said the soldier needed to make a full recovery.

No identity has been disclosed.
