Odisha orders to make school buildings available for shelters and relief distribution

The Odisha Department of School and Mass Education (S&ME) on Wednesday asked District Education Officers and District Project Coordinators of districts that will be affected by the impending rain, to make school buildings available for shelter and relief distribution.

An order in this regard has been issued by the department which has defined preparedness measures in case of heavy rains and floods in the coming days.

As a preparedness measure, the following instructions are issued:

1. All school buildings of the M&ME department of the relevant district shall be made available in accordance with the requirements of the district administration in the event of an emergency.

2. The Principal of Schools may authorize the use of MDM food grains, if required, by the district administration which will be recovered from the SRC and may also authorize school buildings for the purpose of shelter and relief distribution as per needs.

3. For any support in the above field, they can contact the director of secondary education, the director of primary education and SNO, MDM (PM Poshan).

4. All DEOs, DPCs and BEOs should ensure that official papers and documents are kept safe to avoid damage due to heavy rain.

5. All DEOs, DPCs and BEOs will prepare the damage report and the DEO will submit the consolidated report to the respective director under notice to the Department immediately after the end of the impending rainfall.

6. The DEOs will act as the nodal officer in the district for activities related to the M&ME department. They must coordinate and cooperate with the district administration for this purpose.

7. DEOs, DPCs and BEOs will not leave the headquarters without the prior permission of the Collector and District Magistrate. Considering the urgency, it is requested to take all necessary preparedness measures in consultation with the district administration to mitigate the impact of the impending heavy rains.

According to IMD data, a low pressure area is likely to form over northern Bay of Bengal around August 19, 2022 and heavy rain with thunderstorm/lightning is likely to occur over Odisha on August 18-20. August 2022. This rainfall is likely to affect multiple districts in the state.
