Libyan fighters fight Chadian rebels at border: report


Tripoli, September 14 (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – September 15, 2021): Forces loyal to eastern Libyan strongman Khalifa Haftar carried out an operation on Tuesday against an armed Chadian opposition group along the southern border of Libya, media close to Haftar reported.

The special forces of the Tarek ben Ziyad battalion, one of the units loyal to Haftar, carried out a “vast operation … against the mercenaries and elements of the Chadian opposition present in Libyan territory,” the channel reported. Libya al-Hadath television.

He said the forces were targeting rebel positions “on the southern border”.

A battalion member was reportedly killed and the units “destroyed several armored vehicles”.

Several Chadian rebel groups are based in Libya, Sudan and in border areas between countries, including the Front pour l ‘alternation et la concorde au Tchad (FACT).

Veteran Chadian leader Idriss Deby Itno was killed in April in fighting between the army and FACT rebels.

FACT said in a statement that one of its positions was attacked by “the so-called Tarek ben Ziyad brigade, supported by Sudanese fighters and flanked by officers from the Barkhane mission of the French army”.

He said that the fighting took place “in Chadian territory”.

Plunged into chaos in 2011 when Muammar Gaddafi’s regime collapsed, Libya is divided between rival power centers and torn by a bloody conflict involving militias, foreign fighters and jihadist groups.
