Flights canceled, schools closed as Beijing hit by storm

Beijing, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – July 12, 2021): Hundreds of flights were canceled in Beijing as schools and tourist sites were closed due to torrential downpours and high winds on Monday.

City officials have warned residents to stay at home as the Chinese capital faces its biggest storm this year.

Up to 100 millimeters of rain are expected throughout the day in some areas, and the VariFlight aviation tracker has recorded some 700 canceled flights at the city’s two airports.

Weather authorities have warned of “extreme torrential rains” as well as thunder and lightning from Sunday evening to Monday evening in Beijing and neighboring areas.

A landslide was recorded in one of the city’s northern neighborhoods, with state broadcaster CCTV showing footage of a road blocked by scree.

Heavy rains delayed efforts to clear the road, according to state television.

The children remained at home as the city’s kindergartens, primary and secondary schools closed on Monday.

Popular attractions, including part of the Great Wall, have also been closed, with some districts suspending rural host families.

Some of Beijing’s automatic trains will operate manually instead, state media said.

Thunderstorms also hit the nearby city of Tianjin, where state television showed electric scooters driving through flooded streets and dark skies illuminated by regular lightning.

Weather authorities have warned of flooding in 14 rivers, including tributaries from Sichuan and Shaanxi.
