Death toll rises to 38 as heavy rains wreak havoc in India

NEW DELHI, Aug 21 (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News – Aug 21, 2022): The death toll from flash floods and landslides amid torrential rains has risen to 38 in northern and eastern India over the past two days, said media report Sunday.

Most of the deaths – 22 were in the hilly northern state of Himachal Pradesh, followed by six deaths in the eastern state of Odisha, four in Uttarakhand and Jharkhand, and two in occupied Kashmir by India.

The death toll in Himachal Pradesh is feared to rise as six people remain missing while 12 were injured in separate incidents of house collapses and landslides.

Among the dead, eight belonged to the same family.

“These floods are the worst in decades. A lot of damage was done to human life and property,” a local resident said in a phone conversation with Xinhua.

The fury of the rain has broken bridges, cutting off remote areas. Roads and highways were badly damaged, which greatly impeded the movement of people.

Thousands of tourists have been stranded in various locations in the hilly state, a popular destination for tourists, both domestic and overseas.

On Saturday evening, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur told media that he had ordered senior government officials in affected districts to clear roads for traffic and repair or rebuild damaged bridges.

A report from Uttarakhand state says up to 235 roads have been closed in the state due to landslides.
