Biden marks independence from Covid, but pandemic concerns persist

Washington, July 4 (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – July 5, 2021): President Joe Biden prepared to hold a big Independence Day Sunday to salute America’s defeat of Covid-19, amid concern Persistent pockets of the country with low immunization rates remain plagued by the pandemic.

President and First Lady Jill Biden will welcome 1,000 military personnel and their families, as well as essential workers, for the biggest White House event since taking office.

Fireworks that traditionally draw thousands of people to the National Mall – picked up by similar events across the country – will allow the president to mark what he calls “independence from this virus.” A White House official said in a statement that the president will celebrate progress against the virus, but noted that the work is “far from over.” “He will urge all Americans to join the fight – to roll up their sleeves and get vaccinated – and to reiterate his administration’s redoubled efforts to step up vaccinations,” the official added.

During the vacation of last year, with the pandemic nearing its summer peak and cities in America reeling from protests against racism and police brutality, Washington saw a fraction of the visitors it usually welcomes.

After dominating the world in Covid deaths, however – more than 600,000 – the United States has become a model for bringing the coronavirus under control.

With hospitalizations and deaths from Covid-19 down 90% since January and the country largely reopened, the message from the South Lawn will be unequivocal: what a difference a year makes.

“We have a lot to celebrate. We are much further along than I think in this fight against the pandemic,” Jeff Zients, White House coronavirus response coordinator, told ABC.
