Washington, September 20 (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – September 21, 2021): The Biden administration on Monday said it would double the number of refugees it would accept in the next fiscal year to 125,000, amid mounting pressure people fleeing Afghanistan and other countries.
President Joe Biden has reversed a trend started by his predecessor Donald Trump to reduce the number of refugees accepted each year to a few thousand.
Trump set the official cap for the current fiscal year, ending September 30, at just 15,000, and in fact admitted far less than that.
Biden topped that number after taking office, bringing it down to 62,500.
For fiscal year 2022, the level will drop to 125,000.
“Today, the State Department reaffirms our commitment to the resettlement of refugees in line with our long tradition of providing refuge and an opportunity for people fleeing persecution,” spokesman Ned Price said.
“As the world faces unprecedented global displacement and humanitarian needs, the United States is committed to leading efforts to provide protection and promote durable solutions to humanitarian crises,” Price said in a statement. .
The announcement came as Washington tried to help thousands of people who worked for US forces in Afghanistan flee the country and resettle in the United States.
Some of them could fall under the refugee program and others under another “special immigrant visa” program. .
Many Haitians have fled the country’s chronic suffering due to political instability, earthquakes and hurricanes.
