ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Deputies from the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man on suspicion of shooting a man last October on the Pajarito Mesa southwest of Albuquerque.

Jesus De La Cruz Hinojos, 49 years old

Jesus De La Cruz Hinojos, 49, was taken to the Metropolitan Detention Center early Wednesday on an open count of murder in the death of Raul Martinez.

Martinez was found shot dead in his vehicle on the mesa on October 22 after leaving a nearby house to meet a friend, who had stuck a vehicle in the area, according to a criminal complaint filed in the Metropolitan Court.

Several hours later, family members picked up Martinez and found him slumped in his green van with blood coming out of his mouth. He had been shot in the neck, according to the complaint.

According to court documents, a witness said Hinojos threatened Martinez about a month before his death, and witnesses told investigators that Hinojos stuck a vehicle in the mesa around the same time Martinez was shot.

A search of Martinez’s phone records showed that Hinojos called Martinez just before he left home with his family to meet a friend, according to the BCSO.

Hinojos had been arrested by police in Albuquerque about two weeks before the shooting and a firearm had been confiscated from him. Subsequent testing by the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network revealed that the gun Hinojos had when he was detained by Albuquerque police could be linked to the cartridge cases found in Martinez’s car, court documents show .

Prosecutors have filed a motion to detain Hinojos.

“The nature and circumstances of the alleged offense and the weight of the evidence against the accused are sufficient to justify the pre-trial detention of the accused,” Deputy District Attorney D’Ann Rasmussen wrote in a motion to arrest Hinojos.

It was not clear whether Hinojos had a lawyer and an emergency contact for him on his prison records could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.
