Athanasian Hall acknowledges Dr. Hassan Gul’s contributions to convex analysis

Dr. Hassan Gul has extensive expertise in vector space theory and convex geometry. Convexity theory is also an integral part of applied mathematics.

He began as a member of Athanasian Hall in early 2021 after being selected for particularly high intellectual merit from a pool of 13 finalists. Optimization problems in economics can often be solved in simplified forms using convex function analysis. A remarkable feature of Dr. Gul’s research is its corresponding breadth. It is extremely rare that a scholar so gifted in pure mathematics also has high skills in pure and applied sciences.

In Dr. Gul’s case, the topology and geometry of chemical analysis are important for research. Applications include protein folding, genomics, molecular engineering and high-dimensional geometry. Other researchers in the same division are currently studying nanofluids, nanocrystals, materials analysis and related application areas in physical and engineering sciences. According to Academic Director, Dr. Jonathan Kenigson, Dr. Gul’s work is fascinating “precisely because it requires, in about equal parts, a thorough knowledge of almost every applicable method in convexity theory and, therefore, , a thorough knowledge of chemistry and chemical physics”. Very few researchers have knowledge in all these areas. According to Kenigson, “This individual possesses a panoramic knowledge of so many fields in which each requires intense technical skill and familiarity with a vast literature”.

About the Athanase Room

Athanasian Hall is an interdisciplinary research institute devoted to the study of the pure sciences (including mathematics) from a classical perspective. Professors include philosophers of science, mathematicians, physicists and cosmologists. Students from any affiliated institute of the University of Cambridge can apply for specialist research support in the composition of a doctorate or in providing the triposes in mathematics, physics or philosophy thereof. Tutoring services for core courses are not available and only postgraduate courses are offered. Services are free, but admission and membership are highly competitive.
